We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join us as IT Head for EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Australia in Stockley Park, UK (United Kingdom). This will be a leadership hands-on resource reporting directly to the Vice President of Commercial, Medical Affairs and G&A IT. This role will be accountable for managing critical business relationships across EMEA and ultimately delivering on business desired IT outcomes in each of the regions.  More importantly, the IT Director is to be the trusted IT partner for the Executive Management team and the sites that make up EMEA.

Although emphasis will be put on the commercial needs of the EMEA business units, the IT Head will act as a single point of contact for anything related to IT and ensure appropriate functions within IT are mobilized to address any needs/issues (i.e. collaboration technologies, digital innovation. content management, network/performance issues, etc.).  This role will manage a team of business-focused technical leads that provide technology consulting, demand management, capability mapping, business case development, business analysis, requirements planning, business architecture and portfolio management services.  The IT Director, together with IT colleagues, will ensure EMEA’s strategic and business objectives are achieved through specific IT initiatives that align with the technology roadmap and governance process in support of the overall business strategy for the EMEA leadership and teams.

The IT Director will provide leadership to ensure organizational effectiveness and full alignment with other Gilead IT functions. The IT Director will plan, direct and manage the performance of all internal IT operations, so as to maintain and develop business growth in accordance with the overall strategy. The IT Director will have a key role to interact with Gilead’s IT Leadership Team to coordinate delivery through those groups.

Essential Duties and Job Functions

This role will be accountable for, but not limited to, the following 7 key responsibilities: 

1.     Business Engagement

  • Develop and sustain effective relationships and partnerships with key Commercial stakeholders, providing insights, thought leadership and guidance on changing industry landscape, opportunities to use existing technologies deployed in other commercial affiliates, clearly identifying business needs and championing through the portfolio & demand management process to achieve the desired business outcomes while adhering to enterprise IT standards & platforms.

  • Strong background and ability to learn and talk “the language of the business”.   Focus of role is to understand desired business outcomes and work to leverage technology to either automate, improve, control or advance the business.

  • Recognized as a valued member of the EMEA business leadership team and the global IT community.

  • Ability to understand, contribute to and communicate the local and regional business strategy and to promote the global/regional IT capabilities.

  • Ability to establish a regular dialog with key regional business leaders about their strategic priorities, technology roadmap and ongoing IT initiatives with potential regional impact.

2.     Portfolio and Delivery Planning

  • Partner with the Enterprise Project Management Office (ePMO) in prioritizing business-specific demand as part of portfolio planning process.

  • Align with the global commercial strategy and provide regional input into and assist in the maintenance of a three-year roadmap strategy for worldwide commercial that aligns with key business leaders/ stakeholders expectations.

  • Partner with other Regional IT Directors and business leadership to prioritize and deliver priority technology investments to the IT Advisory Council (ITAC) for funding considerations which enable key business objectives over the short & long term.

  • Participate in annual and off-cycle project intake and planning.

  • Implement regional governance model in line with global model and ensure regional representation in global governance committees (e.g. BPC, ITAC).  Align stakeholders across IT & business to ensure cross regional consistency and strategic alignment.

3.     Business Analysis

  • Develop deep and broad business, functional and domain knowledge to enhance IT’s effectiveness of aligning business outcomes with technology solutions.

  • Ensure effective business process and requirements analysis is conducted to serve as a critical input into the software delivery lifecycle.

  • Ensure the seamless hand-off of business requirements and collaboration on functional requirements with required Solution Delivery IT leaders.

  • Ensure effective consultation with business partners in exploring and applying innovative outside-in solution ideas to address business opportunities and challenges.

4.     Business Architecture and Design

  • Collaborate with other IT Leads to have input into and maintenance of the worldwide commercial IT business architecture plan.

  • Build credible relationships with key strategic vendors that align with worldwide commercial IT business architecture blueprint.

  • Partner effectively with other Solution Delivery IT leaders to identify potential shared platform solutions that can be leveraged across multiple business areas/regions to minimize redundant solutions.

6.     Solution Transition and Operations

  • Ensure the operational reliability and performance of all developed solutions prior to transitioning into production through assisting in user acceptance testing and review of various production transition plans.

  • Partner effectively with Operations to provide input into regional support needs to ensure that all developed solutions can be adequately supported regionally or align with global support model.

7.     General Leadership and Management

  • Support the VP of IT for Business Engagement and G&A in leading and managing an effective multi-disciplinary team of business savvy IT experts, and in contributing innovative thoughts to the overall IT vision.

  • Ensure effective leadership, teamwork and collaboration with other IT directors, managers and staff across IT to achieve a unified and responsive IT services approach to the Business.

  • Ensure proper inspection readiness and adherence to compliance at all times.

  • Lead continuous improvements to drive IT effectiveness with the Business and IT.

  • Manage internal personnel, external partners and departmental budgets for on-time and on-budget delivery.


  • 10+ years’ experience in Information Technology including project management and business analysis

  • Biotech/healthcare industry experience is mandatory

  • Broad IT  knowledge across areas like Infrastructure, Operations, Applications, Architecture, SaaS and Security

  • Successful track record of IT leadership, matrix management, execution and delivery.

  • Experience supporting “field” resources such as Commercial, Sales & Medical Affairs

  • Self-motivated with high degree of initiative and excellent follow-up skills, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Well organized, results oriented and eager to tackle difficult problems

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with executive management and non-technical users

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills are essential in this collaborative work environment

  • Comfortable in a fast-paced company environment with minimal direction and able to adjust workload based upon changing priorities

  • Must be capable of working autonomously, is a team player and possess the ability to interact and interface with all levels of management and with global teams

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree in Computer Sciences, MIS, Life Sciences, Business; or equivalent experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of IT infrastructure, applications, telecommunications or other assigned area of expertise

  • Experience with large-scale Oracle EBS / ERP implementations in high-growth companies with manufacturing

  • Hands on experience with top-tier ERP systems, preferably Oracle EBS within the Life Sciences Industry

  • Extensive knowledge of portfolio management and performance monitoring practices and methodologies

  • Extensive knowledge of business finance principles

  • Extensive knowledge of IT organizational practices

  • Ability to build, maintain and extend relationships across the organization

  • Ability to manage and direct activities of others in a multi-project environment

  • Ability to perform business and process analysis
