Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner - Risk and Compliance Counsel

To provide professional, efficient and high quality support to the OGC’s Management team (“OGCM”) and to the Business Acceptance Team “BAT”) in managing the firm’s risk exposure on a range of legal and compliance issues relating to business acceptance. Over time you will become expert in dealing with the full range of legal, commercial and reputational risks arising from conflicts of interest, sanctions, financial crime and anti-money laundering (“AML”).

  • This is an exciting time to join BCLP as, post-merger, the firm manages the development and implementation of global business acceptance policies to address the risks and opportunities across the US and EMEA/Asia arms of BCLP.

  • This is a varied and challenging role which may over time be developed to increase scope and responsibility

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the firm’s global client and matter acceptance processes, particularly by analysing complex issues across the range of business acceptance risks, including conflicts, financial crime and AML, sanctions, reputational and commercial risk. Training and mentoring will be provided to quickly upskill in areas where you do not currently have expertise

  • Act as a contact point for queries and referrals from within the BAT, the US arm of the OGC and the business in relation to business acceptance risks and the interpretation of relevant legislation, contractual and policy requirements

  • Coordinate with partners, other fee earners and the US arm of the OGC to identify/prevent/manage and resolve potential legal and commercial conflicts, financial crime and AML and client due diligence and sanctions issues (or other legal, regulatory or professional issues which are relevant to a decision concerning whether the firm may accept a particular mandate or client)

  • As a member of the firm’s global Business Acceptance Committee, assist in the review and approval of higher risk clients and matters

  • Support the MLRO and/or Deputy MLRO in relation to Proceeds of Crime Act internal suspicion reports and, where necessary, liaising with the National Crime Agency in relation to the same; development and maintaining network of local MLPO officers

  • Support OGCM in respect of other review, monitoring and external reporting requirements concerning economic sanctions issues; external reporting to OFSI, as required, and liaison with other offices in respect of this issue

  • Assist in the ongoing development, implementation and refinement of business enabling, risk-based compliance policy and procedures, with a focus on developing harmonised global policies to support the merger

  • Carry out other discrete projects and any other tasks to support the efforts of the OGC

  • Assist with the delivery of awareness raising, education and training activities to the CT and the business in relation to business acceptance risks

Experience and Knowledge

Essential:

  • Legally qualified and admitted to practise in the UK (or another common law or EU jurisdiction)

  • Knowledge of legislation, ethical rules and guidelines and related compliance issues applicable to international law firms

  • Expertise in the identification, prevention, management and resolution of legal and commercial conflicts of interest

  • Experience working in a commercial (preferably international) environment

  • Experience of dealing with senior stakeholders across various jurisdictions on the commercially focused resolution of difficult and complex business acceptance issues

Desirable:

  • Experience across the range of business acceptance risk issues, including financial crime and AML, client due diligence and sanctions risks

  • Practical experience managing US conflict rules issues
