Transparency International (TI) is the world's leading non-governmental, global, anti-corruption civil society organisation. TI Defence and Security works with governments, defence companies, multilateral organisations and civil society to prevent corruption in defence, and to build anti-corruption capacity and integrity in defence establishments across the world.

The Defence Companies Anti-Corruption Index (DCI) is one of the flagship projects of TI DS. It ranks the world’s largest defence companies on the basis of their anti-corruption programmes and commitment to reduce corruption risks in the sector. Previous editions of the DCI, published in 2012 and 2015, gained a high degree of industry, government, and media attention and have been widely used by stakeholders. The upcoming third edition will assess 140 defence companies across 35 countries on 57 questions relating to their anti-corruption policies. TI DS are looking for five short term researchers to conduct company assessments for the 2019 index.

Key Duties:

  • Locate and interpret publicly available information from companies.

  • Assess company anti-corruption and compliance policies, procedures and published data using the DCI’s Questionnaire and Model Answer document, which can be found at: ti-defence.org/dci.

  • Write a short summary of findings for each question and give a score based on the available evidence, keeping a detailed record of all information used.

  • Respond to feedback from the TI-DS team and amend assessments accordingly.

Role Specification:

  • This is a remote-working position, however candidates must be available for training at the TI-DS offices in London, in early May, likely on 7-10 May 2019. TI-DS will fund travel and accomodation costs for attendance of this training for those requiring it.

  • All candidates must be able to complete the company assessments allocated to them over a period of approximately 5 months.

  • Researchers will be paid for satisfactory completion of the company assessments per a pre-agreed payment schedule.

    • The following provides an indicative overview of the remuneration. Each researcher will conduct ca. 28 company assessments (depending on final number of researchers). As an example, 28 fully completed company assessments would receive £12,600 (with slight variation possible depending on exact portfolio of companies assigned).

Person Specification:

  • Educated to undergraduate level in business, administration, compliance, law, social sciences discipline (political science, international relations, economics or similar) or equivalent.

  • Strong research skills and excellent proven attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated ability to execute research to completion and to a high standard

  • Subject knowledge of business ethics and compliance is preferred, a strong interest in the topic area is essential.

  • Language skills are desirable, but not essential for this role:

    • Preference will be given to candidates with fluency in: Chinese, German, Russian, Japanese, Korean

    • Knowledge of the following languages would also be beneficial: Arabic, Finnish, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Ukrainian

  • Candidates must not be affiliated to any defence contractors or government institutions for at least the last 3 years. Any actual, potential or perceived conflict of interest must be declared to TI DS.

  • Excellent command of written English.

  • Available for the full period of the research.
